What is a segment and how to use them?
What is a segment?
Segments are pedagogical tools that allow for personalized learning experiences tailored to the specific needs of each children. They provide a flexible way to differentiate instruction by adapting the content, instructions, and overall structure of Kiwipolis to meet the diverse learning profiles of children.
In simpler terms, a segment is like a customized version of an activity. It allows you to create personalized learning paths that are tailored to each kid’s strengths and challenges.
How to use segments
1) Click on “Segment 1” in the Activity Content menu to access your base segment. Each activity begins with a base segment (Segment 1), which is the standard version of the activity. This is where you input the main content. To access this, click on “Segment 1” in the “Content” menu of the activity.
2) Click on “Create a new segment” to create custom segments. To cater to the specific needs of different children, you can duplicate the base segment and create new, customized versions. For example, you might create a segment for older children.
3) Assign children to segments: Once you’ve created your segments, assign each child to the most suitable one. Please note that a child can only be assigned to one segment at a time.
You can customize each segment by:
- Modifying the content: Simplifying instructions, reducing text, adding visual aids, etc.
- Adjusting assessment methods: Allowing more time, accepting different response formats, using tailored assessment criteria, etc.
- Adding assistive technology: Integrating accessibility tools such as screen readers, text-to-speech software, etc.
Examples of Segment Use
- Modifications for children with specific needs:
- Dyslexia: Create a segment with audio versions of texts, word prediction tools, and dyslexia-friendly fonts.
- ADHD: Offer shorter activities with clear and concise instructions, and regular breaks.
